Google has issued a critical advisory for Pixel 6a users following reports of battery overheating, potentially leading to fire hazards. The issue has prompted the tech giant to prepare a mandatory software update to limit battery usage on affected devices.

According to internal Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2 code uncovered by Android Authority, certain Pixel 6a units display warnings about overheating risks. The message also redirects users to a support page for battery replacement guidance. "Battery capacity and charging performance are reduced due to a potential overheating issue. Battery replacement is recommended," the embedded code reads.

A Google representative confirmed that once the Pixel 6a crosses 400 charging cycles, battery capacity will be throttled. Warnings will begin showing after 375 cycles, prompting users to seek support. The forthcoming update will include new battery management settings designed to reduce thermal risk by lowering charging speed and limiting overall capacity.

This isn’t the first time Google has faced hardware-related battery problems. Earlier this year, just ahead of the Pixel 9a release, the Pixel 4a experienced a similar overheating issue. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission had flagged that defect, leading to a product recall. In April, the Pixel 7a also came under scrutiny for battery swelling, which prompted Google to launch a dedicated repair program.

Recent reports include at least two Pixel 6a users who claimed their devices caught fire. One Reddit post described a phone spontaneously combusting overnight. In response, Google has begun reaching out directly to owners of potentially affected units.

The company has recommended users install the upcoming update as soon as it's released. Until then, users are advised to monitor battery temperatures and avoid extended charging sessions.
